This former Benedictine monastery has a wild history of destruction and rebuilding. It was largely destroyed in the War of 1525, the Count of Rieneck built it as a residential castle again. The castle was taken over by the church after the death of the last Count and dismantled by hordes of pillage farmers during the secularization of Franconia in the 19th century.

Schönrain am Main was founded around 1080 as a Benedictine monastery, partially destroyed in the German Peasants' War in 1525 and rebuilt as a residential palace by the Counts of Rieneck. After the death of the last countess (1574), Schönrain served as a fief for the bishopric of Würzburg until the beginning of the 19th century as a home for the forest administrators. After Napoleon's victory over Austria, the end of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation and the associated connection of the Franconian areas to the newly created Kingdom of Bavaria (1806), Schönrain was not spared from secularization.

The ruins are traversed by the Schönraintunnel, located above the Main and opposite Neuendorf on the southwestern end of the district of the city of Gemünden am Main, in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart in Bavaria. The Franconian Marienweg runs right by the ruins.

The Schoenrain ruins are a truly impressive complex.
The blink from the back end over the Main towards Lohr is nice.

But the windows of the keep (accessible) also offer a beautiful view over the Main and the Spessart.

There are rest areas (bench + table) in 2-3 places within the ruins. There is also a larger shelter that offers protection in the event of rain.

Interesting information can be found on the website of the support association "GEFÄHRTEN SCHÖNRAINS & FRIENDS E.V."

As long as the bridge in Gemünden is not finished yet, there is the possibility to "shorten" the SPW 1 and to walk to Hofstetten. From there, a ferry goes to Gemünden from where you have back to the train.

The Main Bridge in Gemünden is again passable. There are two different ways to get to the castle from Hofstetten. Parking is available after the cemetery on the left side of Hofstetten coming from.

Schönrain am Main was founded in 1080 as a monastery of the Benedictine Order. It was partially destroyed and plundered for the first time in the German Peasants' War in 1525, but was subsequently acquired by the Counts of Rieneck and rebuilt - this time as a residence. Only after the death of the last countess in 1574 did Schönrain fall back to Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn and was used from then on as the seat of the local forest managers and hunters.

With the secularization of Franconia, the mountain castle finally became the royal Bavarian forestry office - but not for long. As early as 1818, the office's headquarters were moved to Massenbuch and the roof structure of the castle was used to build the office building there. The citizens of the neighboring towns then took the usable building materials from Schönrain and the castle finally became a ruin.
