The Gothic Kreuzberg church, which is freely located on the “Hohenrode” mountain today called Kreuzberg, was built in 1463 in place of a pilgrimage chapel already mentioned in 1430 by order of the Lords of Seckendorff at Hallerndorf Castle. The Kreuzberg Church is thus closely connected to the two castles in Hallerndorf. The upper one of the Lords of Seckendorff, then prince-bishop, the lower of those of Wolfsthal, since 1717 Schönborn. The ditch and a piece of circular wall still exist from the latter (now the site of the new town hall of Hallerndorf), the first has completely disappeared. A panel with ten pictures and verses tells the legend of the origin of the Kreuzberg.
It was certainly one of the undescribed miracles that during the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648), when the pillaging Swedes raged in our area and caused devastating damage, the Kreuzberg church was spared because it was probably so beautifully hidden in the wooded area.
