At just shy of 4km long from the crossroads at the bottom of 서우 고개, this is a very enjoyable climb that has plenty going for it to keep you engaged on the way up. The gradient averages out at 6.2% and despite its relatively gentle nature it’s the highest of the 3 climbs on this route (동부3고개). On the way up there are a number of twists and turns, lower down there is a pretty little rocky stream on your left hand side. Which unless you are committed to stopping for, you only catch little glimpses of, maybe the view would be less obscured during winter. There are also a few plateaus or more kind sections where you can catch a brief break, or change up the gears to stretch your legs.
On the final tight bend, not quite a hair pin but not far off, you round the corner to be greeted by the domed Jungmisan Observatory. If you’ve spent any time in Korea, you could be forgiven for thinking it might be a crazy theme cafe, or oddity museum but it does in fact house a working telescope. In addition to this there is a forest eco-experience centre, 4x4 ATV experience centre, water fun site, campsite and more - worth checking out by the sounds of it!!!
