The "cross made of iron" here on Monte Irago, which was almost legendary for many pilgrims - on the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela on the way to the grave of the apostle James the Elder - has now been replaced by a copy at the original location. The Cruz de Ferro (Spanish: Cruz de Hierro, German: Iron Cross) is a small iron cross mounted on a tree trunk in the Montes de León, marking the highest point of the Camino Francés (Way of St. James), at 1,500 m above sea level, on Monte Irago. Only the Somport Pass on the Aragonese Way is higher. The cross stands in a pile of stones that is constantly being added to by pilgrims. Stones brought from home are placed here, each with its own special meaning for each pilgrim.
