The former Obermarchtal monastery is a very beautiful baroque ensemble with the minster Peter and Paul, which is worth a visit. The lavishly decorated church with plenty of stucco and numerous gold and brown altars invites you to pause, in the quiet park you can relax in the shade of tall trees or take a short walk down to the Danube, provided you can see the very hidden staircase behind the church finds. If you want to fortify yourself for the onward journey, you can stop at the "Adler" monastery inn, sit outdoors and watch the stork nest with the young birds on the gatehouse in spring.

The former canon monastery with the baroque church that was elevated to the status of a minster in 2001 is the only architecturally self-contained and completely preserved monastery complex in Upper Swabia. It houses art-historical treasures such as the summer refectory, the hall of mirrors and the chapter stalls from 1708.

1250 years of 'lived' history Obermarchtal Abbey

Benedictines laid the foundation stone for the Obermarchtal monastery as early as the 8th century.

From 1171 to 1803 the monastery was a Premonstratensian canon monastery.

At the end of the 17th and 18th centuries, princes and abbots decided to elevate the Danube to the baroque river. This development began in Obermarchtal. Step by step, the monastery complex was renovated and designed into a residence, in accordance with the spirit and thinking of the Baroque, in order to underline its reputation as an immediate abbey. The church should become a throne room of God. All external effort, the high art of architecture and the craftsmanship should serve one goal: to make people aware of the coming heavenly glory.

The spacious property is one of the most beautiful in southern Germany and was built in its current form between 1686 and 1770.
