The old pedal cranes are symbols of the old Hanseatic ports. This is an original replica, but without internal mechanics. In contrast, it has been preserved in the Lüneburg crane.

In 1977, a pedal crane based on the Lüneburg Old Crane was erected at the former location of the Stade Salt Crane from 1661 at the Hansehafen, but without the internal mechanics. The dilapidated original was demolished in 1898.

Even if it's a replica, it gives the right flair to this old waterfront.

The old pedal crane is located at the Fisch Ost water market and is also a historical highlight of Stade. In the run-up to Christmas, stories are read out inside for the children and then it looks very cozy.

As quasi Lüneburger I was impressed by the old town in Stade, especially the old port is more imposing than ours. But we also have such an old crane. An impressive collection of pictures, which also shows the new harbor city of Stade.

Just a few years after the first harbor cranes appeared, Stade also received a treadle crane. It stood directly against the harbor's quay wall. This had already been expanded around 1300 and retained its unchanged form to this day.

The crane was first mentioned in writing in 1337.
Until 1659, until the great city fire, it hoisted shiploads weighing several tons ashore.

Historical views of the city suggest that the treadle wheel was mounted on the outside.

The crane treadles ran inside it to set the lifting chains in motion.
The goods were then weighed in the city scales.

Today, the building houses a wine shop.

It was built after the city fire; previously, two houses stood here.

As early as 1661, a new crane replaced the burned-out freight train. It was built of oak, covered with shingles, and had a pivoting boom and an internal treadle wheel, "which is rotated by stepping on it."

It wasn't fire, but people, that brought the structure to its demolition in 1878. It had to make way for a road widening. Before its demolition, an expert report on the crane's condition was prepared. According to this report, it could lift 4.1 tons.

In 1977, the current crane was finally built at the initiative of the Stade Rotary Club.

It is identical to the Lüneburg treadle crane, but does not rotate. Instead of the treadle wheel, it houses an exhibition on the history of the port and its crane.

The port and trading city of Stade, located on the Schwinge tributary of the Elbe, can look back on more than 1,000 years of history. To this day, Stade remains the economic and cultural center of the Altes Land holiday region on the Elbe River and the Stade district.

Danish and Swedish rule left their mark. The Schwedenspeicher Museum at the Hanseatic Harbor still bears witness to the Swedish era.

Even in the past, Stade's Hanseatic Harbor was the economic heart of the Hanseatic city, with trade in products from many parts of the world flourishing. Today, the harbor boasts cafes, restaurants, and inviting seating areas right on the waterfront. In addition to beautiful half-timbered houses, there is also the award-winning and interactive "Sweden Speicher Museum - Hanseatic Museum with Treasure Chamber," the Schwedenspeicher Museum, the Mayor Hintze House with its unusual Renaissance façade, and the historic wooden crane at the fish market. The brick-red old town invites you to stroll through medieval-looking alleys.

Along the pedestrian zone, the many ornate half-timbered houses and merchant houses are lined up like pearls on a string. The Hanseatic city of Stade is a wonderful place to shop – both large and small shops cater to every shopping desire.

Immediately to the left (at number 21) is the double-gabled, green "Goeben House." Prussian General August Karl von Goeben was born here in 1816.

Ewer "Willi" with transom stern: Hull length 11.50 m; beam 3.50 m

The Ewer "Willy," built in 1926 at the Jacobs shipyard in Moorrege on the Pinnau River, north of Hamburg, is a beautiful reminder of the bygone days
of the old Hanseatic port. The word "Ewer" comes from Low German and means "single-boater," meaning these ships had a single crew.

The name refers to the gaff-rigged sails with a boom.

The "Riet-Ewer" was designed to transport products from the Haseldorf outer dike area
and was used as a motor cargo ship in the Haseldorf marshland for four decades, remaining in commercial use until 1962. In 2000, 13 Stade residents raised 65,000 DM and purchased the Giekewer, then donated it to the city of Stade.

Today, the ship is maintained by the Alter Hafen Stade e.V. (Stade Old Harbor Association).

The "Giekewer" (single-masted barges) were flat-bottomed vessels, especially suited for transporting cargo through the Wadden Sea and other shallow waters, and thanks to their leeboards mounted on the starboard and port sides, they avoided getting stuck in the mud.

The leeboards could be partially or completely submerged if necessary.
