The Breitung Landwehr is a section of the Henneberg Landwehr, which is over 60* km long. It begins at the Hohe Klinge near Laudenbach and runs through the territories of the Henneberg municipalities of Frauen-breitungen, Sand, Fischberg and Kaltennordheim to the Hohe Rhön and borders the county of Henneberg-Schleusingen in a northwesterly direction. The complex, built in the 15th century, consisted of a deep ditch with a rampart, sometimes several ditches and ramparts, reinforced by hedges made up of trees and bushes on both sides. Important paths and connecting roads were given special passages called beats. (…from information board)

The Breitunger Landwehr extended far into the Rhön. It was built in the 15th century to demarcate and secure the Henneberg region to the northwest. As was usual for landwehrs, hedges and bushes were planted to prevent illegal passage. People could pass through the passage points (the Schlagen). The Landwehr is not very visible here on the Schwarzer Stock. It is better in the area of the Frankenburg, where it extends very steeply up the slope.
