The legend of the Maidenstone:
At the time of the Hun invasions in the 5th century AD, wild riders from this steppe people also besieged the Franconian castle. The old knight in the castle told his beautiful daughter to escape through an underground passage if he fell. After the defenders had all perished in the fight, the knight's daughter and her maid escaped through the passage into the nearby forest. A little puppy also followed them. The nighttime forest was brightly lit by the burning castle. The young women climbed a tree and thought they were safe from the roaming Huns. But her little dog began to bark constantly, which caused the Hun warriors to get hold of the women, terribly violated them in the Hun style and cruelly killed them. To commemorate this crime, the people of Helmers are said to have later placed a memorial stone, the "Jungfernstein", at the site of the crime.
