The Gothic parish church of St. Johannis in Werben, in the Middle Ages also the church of the Commandery of the Order of St. John, founded here in 1160, is the most important architectural monument in the Hanseatic city on the Elbe. The imposing St. Johannis building, one of the oldest Gothic churches in the Altmark, which was built between 1160 and 1466, greets you from afar. The treasures inside include the stained glass windows, the main altar carved from lime wood in 1470 and the second altar in what used to be the small baptismal niche.
