Lost Kostmolen - Village mill

The village mill in Schaffen originally stood in the hamlet of Eindeken, in Beverlo, and dates from 1826. In 1903 it moved to Schaffen. It was bought by Amandus Peeters and rebuilt in the Kerkstraat, where it was operated by Victor Loots until 1966.
Since the day Victor retired, the sails no longer turned and the mill was no longer maintained.
The city of Diest therefore bought the windmill in 1982, which was protected on 27 September 1979 so that its continued existence would be guaranteed.
The mill was restored by the city of Diest in the period 2004-2005.

The Verloren Kostmolen, is a 19th-century corn mill, of the type wooden pole or standard mill with closed foot.

The mill was founded in 1826 in Beverlo (Limburg). In 1902, Denis Lemmens-Grootjans inherited the mill. In 1903-1904, the mill was dismantled and rebuilt in the Kerkstraat in Schaffen. The windmill is known by various names: the Verloren Kostmolen, the Molen van Schaffen, De Windmolen and the Molen van 't Dorp.

The mill remained in professional operation until 1953, in use until 1966. After that, it was initially well maintained, after which a period of decay set in. Furniture maker Julien De Jaegher from Eeklo bought the dilapidated mill in 1972 with the aim of demolishing it and processing the oak beams into furniture. For safety reasons, the sails and the stairs were removed. In the 1970s, the city of Diest bought the mill. In 2002-2004, the mill underwent a thorough restoration to a mill in working order (disassembly-restoration-assembly) by Thomaes Molenbouw nv from Beveren-Roeselare. On 24 March 2004, this company put the entire mill back in one day: the casing, the mill shaft with wheels, the hood and the riveted sails (type Verhaeghe, Adriaens Molenbouw, Weert).
