Be sure to visit these trees, they are scattered loosely across a mountain meadow. Old and venerable. When the clouds pass through, you feel like you've been transported to another place and time.

Wrap a sweater and if necessary a rain jacket. The clouds often hang very deep here.
Who is afraid of cows gets here possibly problems. Cows walk around freely here or graze. They are peaceful, of course, but you should know.

The Fanal is an area where large laurel trees wash surrounded by a "forest" of fern. This spreads even on the bark of laurel trees. It is really idyllic and there are even brick grills where families with children have spent a relaxing day.

The Fanal area, with its laurel forests, has rightly been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Here you can take a wonderful break and enjoy the landscape.
The so-called fairy forest, which consists of bizarrely shaped old stink laurel trees overgrown with lichens and mosses, has something very mystical about it and is an absolute highlight both in full sun and in fog.
The laurel forest is located at an altitude of 1130 meters between the Paul da Serra plateau and the Ribeira da Janela village. The plateau is also the starting and ending point for the PR13 and PR14 hiking trails. There is a parking lot in the immediate vicinity of the laurel forest.
So if you just want to walk through the forest instead of hiking, you've come to the right place.

The laurel forest is part of the large laurel forest area on Madeira. It is located in the Fanal area, in the northwest of the island. Some of the trees are a few centuries old and may have been here when Madeira was discovered in the early 15th century. It's easy to imagine when the fog drifts through the gnarled, lichen-covered trees.
