Very nice panoramic view on the top. Especially on a sunny autumn day when the foliage has already changed color.
    Breathtaking!

Very nice place. Super great old castle ruins with a beautiful panoramic view of the Ahr valley. Just enjoy the view and the few meters of altitude are already forgotten.

Very beautifully situated castle ruins above the village of Altenahr.
From the castle you have a beautiful view of Altenahr and
          the Ahr valley.
          Absolutely worth seeing!
Foundation, expansion and demolition: The castle was built by Theoderich von Are at the beginning of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1121. In 1714 the castle was demolished and has been a ruin ever since. In between there are six centuries of history with changing castle lords.

In the 12th century Are Castle was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Are. In the middle of the 13th century the Cologne Church took possession of it: in 1246 Count Friedrich von Are-Hochstaden gave the castle and the counties to his brother Konrad von Hochstaden. Konrad von Hochstaden was Archbishop of Cologne at the time. The castle became the seat of the Altenahr office. In this way the Cologne Archbishops consolidated their claim to power in the Ahr valley. They also used the keep as a prison for undesirable enemies of the state.

Since its construction, the complex has been repeatedly expanded and extended over time, especially in the 14th and 15th centuries. As owners of the castle, the Archbishops of Cologne repeatedly mortgaged the complex. However, as the mortgagees often did not live in the castle themselves, a kind of backlog of renovations occurred. As a result, with a few exceptions, the condition of the castle continued to deteriorate until the 17th century, because the changing lords of the castle did not take sufficient care of the restoration and maintenance of the castle.

In 1690, French troops invaded the territory and besieged the castle for nine months. The town of Altenahr lay in ruins, and the castle was also badly damaged. In the following 16 years, the occupiers changed several times. However, the major damage caused by siege and bombardment was not repaired. In the War of the Spanish Succession, Cologne troops took over Are Castle again in 1706. After the Peace of Rastatt, the Cologne Archbishop and Elector Joseph Clemens finally had the castle blown up. Parts of the destroyed castle were used as building material for a new office building in Ahrweiler. The castle has been a ruin since 1714.

In 1713 the well was covered. Many years later it was rediscovered and cleaned, meters of animal skeletons emerged from the well and 298 years after the covering the first buckets of water could be taken from the well.

In 1246 Count Friedrich von Hochstaden, provost of Xanten, donated the county with the castles Are, Hardt and Hochstaden to the archbishopric of Cologne with the consent of his brother Conrad of Are-Hochstaden. The extension buildings with extensive defensive wall were built in the Kurkölnischer time during the 14th and 15th century to protect the Kurkölnischen possessions in the Ahrgebiet. In the 16th and 17th centuries, there were only minor changes in the building fabric through repairs and replacement buildings. At times, the castle also served as a prison in which the archbishops of Cologne had imprisoned unwelcome opponents in order to make them docile. For a long time Burg Are was a spiritual and cultural center for the whole area.

The archbishops of Cologne pledged the castle Are more frequently with the office Altenahr. The pledgees were each used as stewards and often lived in the castle. For long periods of time, the structural condition of the castle complex was poor, as the pledgees could not carry out the necessary repairs. An exception with a structurally very good condition was the time of Heinrich von der Horst, who died in 1625.
1690, the castle was conquered for the first time after nine months of siege by French troops. The shelling had severely damaged the castle. 1697 withdrew the French, occupy the castle but from 1701 onwards Spanish War of Succession again. In 1706, the troops took over the castle and made the area unsafe. For this reason, Elector Joseph Clemens of Bavaria in 1714 blew up the walls in agreement with the villagers. Since then, the castle is a ruin. Still recyclable materials, such as wood and stones, served as building material for the new construction of the Amtshaus at the foot of the castle hill.
