The hay squats – the Sindelsdorfers call them "strahdrischen" – were rebuilt with bedding in the traditional way, just as their forefathers once did.

First, a so-called "foot" was formed around the bedding post driven into the mossy ground. Then, portions of hay were loaded by hand with a fork and tamped down around the trunk with the feet. This is how the pear-shaped strahdrischen were finally created, several meters high. Finally, a square piece of excavated peat was placed on top as a "cap" – in accordance with regulations. The pear shape prevents rain or dew from penetrating the interior of the strahdrischen.

In the past, the strahdrischen were built as a winter storage facility and then used in portions as bedding in the stable. The bedding from the poor meadows was unsuitable as fodder because it was too dry and bristly.

The Heuhocken now form a key point of the Sindelsdorf Painters' Trail and offer the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the moor, the mountains, and, above all, the view to the Offmühle (mill) and the former St. Mary's Church, now the rectory. This silhouette is part of the famous painting "The Enchanted Mill" (1913), depicting the old Offmühle (mill) during the time of Franz Marc.
