                    Vilsegg Castle was built around 1220/30 on a steep Wetterstein rock directly above the much-traveled trade route, the Via Claudia Augusta, which ran along the northern edge of the Vils valley, as an unmissable, imposing centre of power. Its ownership brought considerable income from customs duties and escort rights.

                    Its builders were the noble Lords of Hohenegg - an important noble family from the West Allgäu, who descended from the powerful Rettenberg family. Just a few kilometres south, the Rettenberg family owned another castle, the Höhlenburg Loch near Pinswang. They appointed a servant family to their Vils Castle, which named itself after the castle.

                    Rudolf von Hohenegg served as Imperial Chancellor in 1271 and as Archbishop of Salzburg in 1285. At the instigation of his son Peter von Hohenegg, King Ludwig the Bavarian elevated Vils to the status of a town in 1327. The tiny town, protected by a city wall, a city moat and two gates, flourished through iron processing, ore and gypsum mining, grain cultivation, timber trade and clearing. Although the fief was transferred to Duke Friedrich IV of Austria in 1408, the castle and the lordship remained as sub-fiefs (“after-fiefs”) with the Hoheneggers, who in 1514 even received the blood ban, high jurisdiction and the right of asylum from Emperor Maximilian I. From 1550 onwards, the small castle or office building built in the town took over the administrative and residential function of the inconveniently located, difficult to maintain castle, which then fell into neglect and from 1709 into disrepair.

                    Only when the Hoheneggers died out did the rule of Count Leopold Wilhelm von Königsegg pass to Emperor Leopold I in 1672. The castle and town of Vils came to Austria in 1816 in exchange for Marktredwitz (FRG).
