The Minden Waterway Crossing is an impressive engineering marvel in Germany. It is the largest double waterway crossing in the world,

where the Mittelland Canal crosses the River Weser.

This impressive structure includes a 341-meter-long canal bridge

that allows ships to cross the river.

The waterway crossing includes two locks: the Minden Schachtschleuse and the Minden Weserschleuse. These locks help ships to overcome the 13-meter difference in height between the canal and the river.

There is also an information center on site where visitors can learn more about the history

and technology behind this remarkable structure.

The Minden waterway intersection is a crossroads of two waterways in the East Westphalian town of Minden. Here, the Mittelland Canal is led since 1915 in a trough bridge over the Weser Valley and about 13 m lower Weser. Here, the central part of the Mittelland Canal crosses a navigable from south to north navigable river.

Since 1998, the shipping traffic has been running on the parallel constructed new bridge. Both canal bridges bridge the river and the Weser meadows at 370 m and 398 m, respectively. This allows 174 km of free travel for the navigation on the canal, which would otherwise have to overcome this terrain cut with locks.

The Mittelland Canal is connected to the Weser via two connecting channels with locks, which allow shipping to change between the two waterways. For Mittelland Canal, Weser and the two connecting channels, the Water and Shipping Authority Minden is responsible.

In addition to the cross in Minden, the Magdeburg Waterway Cross is located along the Mittelland Canal. Both are the only waterway crosses in Germany with a trough bridge. Trough bridges are very common in the area of German waterways. If these cross a no (more) navigable watercourse, such as that of the leash at Seelze, this is not referred to as a waterway cross.
