This artificial lake, dating back to the early 1900s, was created by the Italian State Railways to power the Bologna-Pistoia railway line. It is located within the Suviana and Brasimone Lakes Regional Park.
On its south-eastern coast stands the Brasimone Research Center of ENEA (National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Development). Here, according to a project dating back to the 1970s, a nuclear reactor was supposed to be built. However, work was suspended following the Chernobyl accident in 1986 and the abrogative referendums of 1987 and the structure was converted and repurposed.
