The castle initially changed hands several times. It was not until 1736 that Crown Prince Friedrich II and his wife Elisabeth Christine moved into the palace. In 1740, after the death of his father, Friedrich became king and left Rheinsberg Palace. Four years later he gave it to his younger brother Heinrich, who lived in it until the end of his life.
According to an anecdote in Theodor Fontane, Heinrich loved one of his adjutants. Since the king did not like this, Heinrich had to remove the man from the castle. Heinrich gave his friend a castle just an hour's riding from Rheinsberg Castle. So the king's order was satisfied and both could still see each other regularly.
