The rock ridge of the Castelgrande consists of gneiss and rises almost 40 meters above the old town. On the north side, almost vertically sloping rock walls offer protection, on the south side, slightly less steep steps make access more difficult. At the top is a plateau divided into terraces with a diameter of 150 to 200 meters. The late medieval Bering rests for the most part on the Roman fort wall. The interior of the extensive castle area is largely empty, which is due to the removal of numerous buildings in the 15th century and the demolition of modern armory structures in the 20th century. In the Middle Ages, the area was divided into plots and densely built over.

An impressive castle open to the public. A beautiful grotto (bistro) on the edge of the castle invites you to linger. The passageway that runs under the wall into the valley is also interesting. Entrance fee for the museum and tower: 5 francs

The first human settlement on San Michele Hill dates back to 5500/5000 BC (Neolithic period). The first archaeologically confirmed fortress was built in the 4th century AD. Various documents from the 6th century also mention the existence of a fortified complex. In the 14th century, the castle was first called Castrum Magnum, Castel Grande. This is its current name, although during Swiss rule it was called Uri Castle (1630) or Altdorf Castle, and in 1818, S. Michele Castle.

If you only want to enjoy the view from the top over Bellinzona and the valley and walk the Murata (bullwark), you can do that for free.

Castle Grande, together withas Castello di Monte Bello and Castello di Sasso are part of the UNESCO world heritage sites since the year 2000.

Castelgrande is a hilltop castle in Bellinzona, the capital of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. As one of the three castles of Bellinzona, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, along with the Castello di Montebello, the Castello di Sasso Corbaro and the Murata. It is also a cultural asset of national importance. The castle is located 277 m above sea level on a mighty rocky ridge above the old town.

Luckily, an elevator goes from the old town up the castle hill to the Castell Grande. So you can enjoy the view from up there, quite comfortably, without breaking a sweat.
