Here at Sophienhof in the beautiful nature you can still admire the traces of the ice age. If you look over the country like this, it is difficult to imagine how cold it used to be here and what it looked like back then.
Compression moraines, which are often characterized by very high relief energy, arise when the pressure of an advancing glacier causes older material that has been deposited in front of the glacier front to come under horizontal and vertical pressure, thereby compressing and throwing it up. Depending on the nature of the older material, compression moraine consist of a wide variety of sediments. Mostly it concerns older glacial deposits like sand, ice reservoir sediments or older bed load marl.
However, the subsurface compression is not bound to the edge of the ice and thus to an end moraine. Even below an active glacier, within the later basic moraine landscape, material can be intensely disturbed by the pressure exerted.
In technical terms, the more neutral term compression moraine has therefore become established.
