Peter Krall has created a nice little park here. In the meantime there is a small lake, a playground, a restaurant and many benches in the Volksgarten next to the rich tree population.

"... Krall was born on June 9, 1826 in Oberniedergeburth, the son of Johann Peter and Maria Sybilla Margarethe Krall, née Schlickum. Peter Krall was an entrepreneur at a factory for asphalt roofing felt on Mühlenstraße in Rheydt. He was also a city councilor On the city's advisory and decision-making body, Krall founded a cotton mill together with Martin May in 1866 before buying the "Kamper Bend" site in Bungt twelve years later they converted the property they had acquired into a garden landscape, which is still considered the birth of the present Volksgarten.
On August 12, 1893 Peter Krall died at the age of 67. A month later, the then mayor Viktor Kaifer announced in a town council meeting the donation of 16 hectares, 20 ares and 89 square meters to the city. The conditions of the founder were, however, that the site was called "Volksgarten" and should be accessible to every citizen. Over the years, the area increased to 120 hectares through additional land purchases by the city and foundations from companies. The construction of what is now the Volksbad began in 1924. At that time, the water for the swimming pools still came from the nearby Bungtbach. The outdoor pool in the Volksgarten was opened two years later.
During the Second World War, bombs destroyed the park, the restaurant and the Volksgartenhalle. Except for the hall, everything was later rebuilt. In addition, the area had to be afforested afterwards, as some Gladbach trees were taken away for private purposes. Since 1962 the Volksgarten has been under nature protection ... "
