The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, also known as the Ludwig Canal, runs between Bamberg and Kelheim. It was built between 1836 and 1846 under King Ludwig I of Bavaria and, as the name suggests, connects the Main and the Danube. In doing so, he established a seamless navigable connection from the mouth of the Rhine near Rotterdam to the mouth of the Danube in the Black Sea. The waterway was closed in 1950 and is now a local recreation area. So this waterway has lost its original purpose of being a traffic connection from different regions, but today it re-establishes the connection between man and nature.
