The first mill has stood here since 1585. After various predecessors burned down, this mill was built here in 1875. It is the landmark of the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg and a technical cultural monument. It represents a gallery Dutchman in a stately country house style. Today's windmill Johanna is managed by the Wilhelmsburger Windmühlenverein e. V. after thorough repairs as a mill museum and also serves as a wedding mill.

The Johanna windmill is the fifth windmill that has been built at this location since 1582. It lies in the so-called Schönen Feld, dammed in 1433, on the original island of Stillhorn. The Stillhorn was condensed to the island of Wilhelmsburg in 1672 with the other islands, Reiherstieg-Rothehaus and Georgswerder. With an area of 35.3 square kilometers, Wilhelmsburg is the largest river island in Europe and also the largest district of Hamburg.
