Monday to Friday: Closed

Saturday to Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

The volunteers of the Saaleck Local History Association try to open the castle to visitors on the weekend. If you want to be sure that it is open, you should call 034463/27745 beforehand between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The exhibition in both towers and the view from the west tower are great.

Saaleck Castle was a complex of the Margraves of Meißen. He had the castle as a fief and the right to exercise jurisdiction and collect tithes. The castle changed hands several times until the Reformation.
Then the castle began to decline. The castle was used as a quarry by local farmers, only the two round towers remain, and it was first mentioned in 1140 by the Naumburgers.

Saaleck Castle was probably founded in the 12th century by the Margraves of Meißen as a counter-fortification to the neighboring Rudelsburg diocese of Naumburg. However, there was a stronger connection to the monastic area of the Naumburg bishops through the local nobility of the Vargula taverns, who exercised local administrative power. After the Reformation, from the 16th century onwards, the monastery area effectively became a special territory in association with the Electorate of Saxony. After the Saxon administration moved to the Stendorf manor in 1585, the castle increasingly fell into disrepair and was partly used as a quarry by the residents of the surrounding towns.
