Wolfsmünster Castle was built by Philipp II von Thüngen and his father Albrecht. The portal bears the Thüngen coat of arms, framed by the year 1584.
In 1670 ownership was transferred to the Juliusspital in Würzburg.

The name Wolfsmünster is traced back to Baugolfszell. Abbot Baugulf gave his name to Wolfsmünster. Via Baugolfszell, Baugolfsmünster, Bolsmünster the place name was gradually reduced to Wolfsmünster. Baugolf, abbot of the Fulda monastery, took over the management of the imperial abbey from 779 to 802 after the death of his predecessor Sturmius, who died in 779. He now began building the basilica, the “Church of the Holy Sepulchre”. Boniface. But he soon grew tired of the “busyness” of the monastery. He intended to retire into solitude and devote the rest of his days to the health of his soul. So he had a cell built on the spot where Wolfsmünster is located.

He lived there with a few like-minded brothers from 802 to 815. The location is due to the research of Dr. Hack and Dr. Schenk, both from Würzburg, probably made it. During the construction of a new building at Baugolfstrasse 18, a few steps west of the church, seven well-preserved human skeletons were found at a depth of 1 1/2 m and were determined to be 900 to 1000 years old. From one of the leg bones there was a pencil-thick trace filled with a brownish, powdery mass. It appears to have been the remains of a belt strap from a monk's robe. According to popular tradition, the monastery stood in the so-called "courtyard gardens" of the village, which corresponds to the location west of the outskirts. In 815 the abbot emeritus returned to Fulda. However, individual monks must have remained in the cell until 836.

The Thüngen were able to hold onto the Wolfsmünster property, which they had acquired from the Counts of Rieneck on March 24, 1550, for barely 120 years and had to hand it over to the Juliusspital on May 24, 1670, whose coat of arms with the 3 rings and the year 1803 can be seen on the outer gate. In the 19th century the castle passed into private hands.
