If you want to go all the way up, you have to climb 105 steps! Once at the top, you can see the Leipzig Battle Monument in good visibility. The tower itself is about 30 meters high and dates from the 10th century. The age information refers to the foundation, because the tower was rebuilt several times.

On October 9, 1813, a few days before the Battle of Leipzig, Field Marshal Blücher's headquarters was in place for a few hours. Due to the decisions of the Congress of Vienna Pouch came to Prussia and was in 1816 the district of Bitterfeld in the administrative district of Merseburg the province of Saxony assigned, to which it belonged until 1944.

The 13th-century Red Tower is 30 meters high. Over 105 steps you reach the observation deck. From here, the visitor has a far-reaching view over the landscape park Goitzsche, the local situation Pouch and in the background the Muldestausee and the Dübener Heide. On a clear day you can even see the Monument to the Battle of the Nations and the University of Leipzig as well as the Petersberg near Halle.
From afar, the Red Tower points the way to the adjacent Schloss Pouch. Only a few remnants of the wall suggest that there was a castle in the 10th century.

The Red Tower was built in the 13th century and served as a defensive and prison facility. More than 100 steps lead to the nearly 30-meter-high viewing platform. Because of the so-called Becher bet - a local Heimatsage - the tower is known.

In addition to the castles in Wurzen, Püchau, Eilenburg, Düben, Tiefensee and Löbnitz, Pouch Castle was part of the series of permanent places that were set up in the 10th century for the military security of the conquered Sorbian land and for the control of the subjugated population along the Mulde.

Pouch was first mentioned as Pauc in the chronicle of Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg in 981. In 1064 the castle warden came into the possession of the diocese of Meißen.

Documents indicate several spellings from 1012 to 1350, including Pauc, Povch, Pwch, Powch, Pach. It can only be interpreted from Old Saxon as a beech place.

It was a large castle complex for the time. The artificially elevated castle area is around 50 meters wide and 80 meters long. The steep slope to the Mulde naturally secured the castle to the west and south. On its north and east sides, the complex was secured by ramparts reinforced with palisades and by ditches, the remains of which can still be seen in the castle park today.

The stone tower, built in the 13th century, replaced a previously wooden defensive tower. In the event of the castle being conquered, it offered its defenders a last resort.

With the development of weapons technology, the castle lost its former military importance and gradually turned into a residential palace.

The tower was built from the 15th to the 18th. Century used as a court and prison tower. The owner of Pouch Castle, Count Solms-Sonnenwalde, restored the tower after 1877 and converted it into a lookout tower.
