The chimney, designed in color by Daniel Buren, is a real eye-catcher.
You can see it clearly from the Chemnitztal cycle path.
The building shines in all its splendor, especially in the evening sun.

One can say the new landmark of Chemnitz

The chimney of the Nord II thermal power plant was completed in 1984. With a height of 301.80 meters, it shapes the cityscape and is also the tallest building in Saxony. “Esse” or affectionately referred to as “Schorsch”, “Lulatsch” or “Buntstift”.

The 302 meter high chimney is the largest structure in Saxony and is part of the Chemnitz thermal power plant. Wind, rain and frost had damaged the reinforced concrete over the last 30 years. Therefore, the 18,000 square meter outer shell had to be renovated. A renovation of the tallest building in Saxony became necessary to ensure continued operations. Therefore, the loose smaller parts of the outer shell were roughly removed first. Special workers who were skilled at heights then prepared the surfaces for subsequent repairs. The surface was then treated or filled with a synthetic resin-bound concrete. After priming, the workers applied the colorful industrial paint as the final step of the renovation, which protected the structure from wind and weather and gave it an individual coat of paint.

                Color design:
For the last step of the renovation work, someone came up with something very special. The 18,000 square meter outer shell was designed according to a design by the French artist Daniel Buren, which envisages seven colored sections of approximately the same size. When choosing the colors, it was important to the artist that the chimney stood out well from its surroundings, even from a distance. This is how the idea came about to use seven contrasting, cheerful colors for the seven segments of the chimney.

The colors of the outer shell of the 302m high chimney were arranged alphabetically during its renovation by the French artist Daniel Buren. The first letters of each color determine the order. Starting from the ground with aquamarine, the colors continue as follows: strawberry red, yellow-green, sky blue, melon yellow, signal violet and finally traffic yellow.
A total of 168 LED lights illuminate what is probably the tallest work of art in the world in the evening and night.

When arranging the colors in his works, Buren follows a simple logic: “To avoid the question of harmony and disharmony, I arrange the colors alphabetically. The first letters of the respective colors determine the order. I take the national language and arrange the colors according to their names. If it is a horizontal arrangement, then from left to right. And if you have a building like this one that goes up, then I use the order that you know from the arrangement of floors in an elevator. Then I start on the ground floor in the Latin alphabet with the "A" and continue to climb up. So maybe there is harmony or maybe there is disharmony, but that is not important because it can be explained and that is why this arrangement is chosen. The order of the colors does not correspond to any particular taste, not even mine” explains the artist in an interview.

Since November 2017, a total of 168 LED lights have illuminated what is probably the tallest work of art in the world in the evening and at night. This creates a new highlight in the Chemnitz silhouette, even at night.
The lighting center Lichtwholesale from Dresden planned and supervised the LED project. The LED lights were mounted on the chimney's balconies. For each color section, 14 LED lights shine upwards and downwards. Each light consists of 100 state-of-the-art LEDs and has a maximum output of 300 watts. Since the lights are only operated with 60 watts, a long service life of around 100,000 hours is guaranteed. If an LED should fail despite its high durability, the LED attached to the balconies can be replaced quickly and easily. A timer in which the sunrise and sunset are saved switches the lighting on and off.

The LEDs consume approximately as much electricity per year as 15 households with an average consumption of 2,500 kilowatt hours. eins carried out a lighting report and a species protection report for the lighting variant.

Daniel Buren was represented at the Documenta in Kassel several times. In 2007, Buren was awarded the Japanese Praemium Imperiale, presented by the Japanese Emperor. This prize is also called the “Nobel Prize for the Arts”. In May 2012, Daniel Buren opened a monumental work on 10,000 square meters as part of Monumenta in the Grand Palais in Paris. Daniel Buren has many years of experience with artistic solutions for large-scale projects.
