The Hirschenstein is an imposing rock massif at the entrance to the Steinbach valley with a source of radium. You hike to this destination via the certified Höhensteig hiking trail.
The Hirschenstein is located in the transition zone (contact zone) between the rising magmatic pluton and the surrounding rocks (map). The oldest rocks in the area are mainly phyllites (shales) and quartzites, which were formed in the older Ordovician. About 450 million years ago, clay and sand were deposited in the sea that existed in Central Europe at the time. The cementing of the loose sand first formed sedimentary rock, then the metamorphic rocks phyllite and quartzite formed as a result of pressure, temperature and mechanical stress. Today, the quartzite forms the distinctive rocky reefs in the area. After the quartzite and phyllite layers were partly covered by other layers, they were folded up to form the Variscan mountains about 330 million years ago.
