Near the north-western border of the urban area of Erfurt there are some gypsum keuper hills in the Erfurt fault zone, which stand out clearly from the flat undulating landscape near the Gera floodplain. The most famous and also the largest is the threshold castle, designated as a nature reserve. To the northwest, separated only by a strip of arable land, the 1.8 hectare "Kippelhorn", protected by nature conservation law, rises about 30 meters from its surroundings. In the summit area, the gypsum rock is exposed on the south-facing slope, otherwise the entire area is taken up by semi-dry grass and dry grass communities that are exposed to different degrees.

Schwellenburg is a dry grassland nature reserve north of Erfurt and offers a wonderful panorama of the surrounding area, extending as far as Erfurt and the northern Thuringian Basin, as far as the Schrecke, Kyffhäuser, and Heilinger Heights.
A must-see for nature lovers.
