For the first time in winter I walked from Giechburg to Gügel in snow. In some places the path was slippery and icy, but overall easy to walk. And the view is fantastic!

The church of Sankt Pankratius on the Gügel belongs to Zeckendorf (municipality of Scheßlitz). The Gügelkirche is a landmark in the Bamberg region. Originally it was a castle and was built on Jurafels.

The Gügelkirche is visible from afar, as it stands on a ridge of the Franconian Alb and looks far into the Bamberg country. Many think that it is a small chapel. Only when you come to the church, you are amazed at the size and the entire structure. A church built on rock. Originally there was a castle in this place, which is mentioned in 1274 in a document of Bamberg bishop. In 1390, the castle came by purchase in the possession of the Bamberg bishops. After several predecessor churches, the present church was built from 1610-1618. The builder was G. Bonalino. According to his plans, the high altar was also made. The high altar painting was painted by the Bamberg court painter Wolfgang Fugkehr and shows the image of Mary in the sky.

The Gügelkirche is also a Vierzehnheiligen church. The sculptor Michael Kern made fourteen alabaster figures for the church in 1611, which are very finely crafted. In addition to two richly decorated side altars, there are numerous figures in the church. In 1834, the pulpit and the gallery from the Bamberg cathedral were installed here. The organ was built around 1618 by an unknown master and originally stood in another church. The Gügelkirche also has a small chapel under the choir in which since 1891 a Lourdes grotto is located. The last church renovation was carried out from 1984-1994.
Patron Saint is the hl. Pankratius (May 12).

Special celebrations on the Gügel are: Pankratius, Jakobus, Maria Himmelfahrt, Guardian Angel Festival, Kirchweih, Christkönigfest. Wedding on the Gügelkirche is also possible.

The pilgrimage church stands on a rock. On a ledge there is an annex with the sacristy. Partially inserted into the western wall, a tower rises. To the west is a terrace in front of which a staircase leads up.
In the basement of the chancel there is a chapel, from which a spiral staircase leads to the nave through a passage carved into the rock.
The high altar, created in 1630/32, shows a view of the pilgrimage church with the silhouette of Bamberg in the background. The pulpit comes from Bamberg Cathedral, from which it was removed with the purification in the 19th century.
The Franconian Marienweg runs past the pilgrimage church.

Church with an interesting history. Unfortunately it wasn't completely open due to renovation work (06/2021). The way up is also beautiful and a circular route combined with the Giechburg (less than 4 km from the lower parking lot) is definitely worthwhile.
