Feuchtwangen (Franconian Feichtwang) is a town in the Middle Franconian district of Ansbach located directly on the Romantic Road.

    Geographical location

Geographically and geologically Feuchtwangen lies on the Frankenhöhe, a part of the Schwäbisch-Fränkische Schichtstufenlandes, which is also called Gypsum Keuper landscape. Characteristic of this landscape is the rapid change of deep valleys and mostly forested ridges, which was caused by the low resistance of the Keuper layers. This allowed the watercourses in the area to clear wide valleys. The city of Feuchtwangen lies in the Sulzach valley, and the extensive urban area also includes parts of the Wörnitztal.

    The historic old town

The most well-known is the market place, which the art historian Georg Dehio called the "Festival Hall of Franconia" in his standard work on art history.

The iron tube fountain from 1727 on the marketplace carries a statue of Minerva as a protector of crafts and trades. The coat of arms of the Ansbacher Margrave, the Württemberg coat of arms as a hallmark for the ironworks in Königsbronn and the two coat of arms of the imperial eagle and the spruce are shown in individual fields (all coats of arms are duplicated).

The former collegiate church, with Roman remains and later extensions, stands on the square of the former monastery church of the Benedictines and the Augustinian canons with an altar from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut. Originally it was a flat-roofed, three-aisled basilica, but due to the reconstruction of the centuries is (except for the no longer original Westwerk) of this impression nothing more preserved.

The Johanniskirche is the parish church of the place.

The Romanesque cloister serves as a backdrop for the open-air theater of the cloister games. Individual parts probably date from the second half of the 12th century.

    "Box"

    Feuchtwanger craftsmen's rooms

Parts of the city wall ring from around 1400, with remnants of defense towers, survived only fragmentarily, mainly in those places where houses were built on the inside of the city walls.

Worth seeing are the streets adjoining the market square with Museumsstraße, Untere Torstraße, Hindenburgstraße, Bärmeyerplatz u. a.

Likewise the picturesque lanes at the city wall with their craftsmen and Ackerbürgerhäusern, which often use the city wall as a house back wall, z. B. Vorderer and Hinterer Spitzenberg, Hirtengasse, Gerbergasse, Webergasse, Jahnstraße.

The small gallery in the Forstamtsgarten; There are changing exhibitions by numerous leisure artists.

The Upper Gate in the Hindenburgstraße is the only existing remnant of formerly three city gates. It was converted into a Biedermeier gatehouse in the 19th century. The lower gate had to give way to the growing traffic in 1869, the hospital door collapsed after a fire in 1811 and was demolished.

The "box" next to the St. John's Church is a stately half-timbered building, built in 1565 by the administrator Johannes Hufnagel, was used to collect the natural contributions of the collegiate of the abolished in 1563 pin for the Margrave government. He stands on the foundations of the old Karner, in place of the Borkirche, the worn-out Peter and Paul's Chapel. After an internal renovation, it has been used since 1982 as a town hall.

The Taubenbrünnlein, on which the legend of the founding of the city is represented by Charlemagne:

Emperor Charlemagne, d. 814, hunted in this area a few years before his death. He got lost in the forest and was tortured by violent thirst. Then he saw a dove fly up, and, rushing to this place, he came to the source of this fountain. Newly rejoiced, his hunting succession soon found him again and out of gratitude to God, he built near the source of a church and a monastery, which he became the founder of the city Feuchtwangen.

The Schranne in the Lower Torstraße houses the small city hall. In the basement historical fire-brigade equipment are exhibited, also from some local parts.
