The view is magnificent - and so is the opportunity (except on Mondays) to have a meal right next door. Everything from roasts, cakes and beer to coffee is available.

The hiking area around the Eselsberg is very worthwhile for several reasons. Circular tours of various lengths can be undertaken starting at Masserberg. Masserberg attracted its first holidaymakers to the town at the end of the last century. The mayor at the time, Magnus Enders, recognized the opportunity to develop the mountain resort for tourism. In 1899, construction began on an observation tower on the Eselsberg, which would provide guests with a sweeping view of Thuringia.

Over the years, the tower underwent a number of renovations and new constructions.

After German reunification, the observation tower was extensively restored and now measures 33 meters high.

Today, the "Rennsteigwarte" is the only observation tower directly on the Rennsteig, inviting guests from near and far to enjoy the magnificent view of the Schneekopf, the Schwarzatal, the Fröbelturm, the Veste Coburg, and the peaks of the Fichtelgebirge, among others.

On the summit of the donkey mountain are on the Rennsteig a trip restaurant and a 33 m high lookout tower, the Rennsteigwarte (♁⊙). The tower was built in 1974 after two wooden predecessors had been destroyed in 1951 by storm and 1974 by lightning. In the 1990s, it was rebuilt: The existing construction of steel framework was disguised with the inclusion of two open across corner glass surfaces. Behind the window glazing of the observation deck, there are photographs of the entire panorama with inscriptions of important visual targets (Wikipedia).
