The Heinrichsburg was a hilltop castle near Mägdesprung, which today is only preserved as a ruin. The castle was built on a 349 meter high mountain spur that can only be accessed from the north, while all other sides drop off steeply.

The castle was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century as a hilltop castle and served to secure a transport route leading from Thuringia to Quedlinburg as well as the mines and smelting works in the surrounding area. It was probably founded by Heinrich von Gatersleben, who also gave it its name.

I was really impressed by the castle. One sees "only" ruins and two ditches. But you can see very clearly why it was built. To guard the trade route. It is on top of a mountain.

The ruins of the Heinrichsburg stand on a mountain spur near Mägdesprung. It was founded by Heinrich von Gatersleben at the beginning of the 13th century. In 1333 the castle came to a branch of the Counts of Stolberg. With these it degenerated into a robber baron's castle. The robber count was feared by the passing merchants until several counts and towns joined forces in 1344, conquered and destroyed the castle. The robber barons were all executed, only most of their booty was lost. The robbers probably buried them near the castle, because several gold finds from the vicinity of the castle ruins were handed down from the following centuries.

From the hiking trail from Sternhaus to Mägdesprung you can reach the ruins of Heinrichsburg, a very beautiful hiking trail. There was a small gift for dear hikers in the Castles & Palaces stamp box. So for me 😊😚
