The collegiate church is typical of Dinant and has become the symbol of the city due to its special pear-shaped spire. It is almost completely built against the underlying rocks, something that had dramatic consequences in the 13th century when a piece of the rock fell on the building.

The spire makes this church very exceptional in design. Inside, the Ladon stained glass window is immediately noticeable, which is one of the largest in Europe. The bust of Saint Perpetuus is a gem. According to legend, this saint died in Dinant in 617. His relics were kept in a shrine in the church. During the sack of Dinant in 1466, they were captured and taken to nearby but hostile Bouvignes. They were later returned, but the reliquary would later be lost. However, the beautiful bust can still be admired and has been given a prominent place in the church.

There was already a Romanesque church on this site in the 10th century. However, this church was destroyed in 1228 when a piece of the underlying rock came loose and landed on the building. The church was rebuilt in Gothic style but was not completed until the 15th century. During the sack of the city by the Duke of Burgundy in 1466, the church was seriously damaged and had to be repaired. This happened again in 1554, this time by a French siege. It was not until 1566 that the typical pear-shaped spire was placed on the tower. It was originally intended for the then town hall that was built on the bridge over the Maas. During the First World War the church was damaged one last time and had to be restored again.
