The artist, Markus Thurner from Maurach am, designed the walnut altar with garnet inlay and a portrait of Blessed Engelbert Kolland (wood mosaic made from 7 different local woods) Achen.

                                  The Garnet Chapel

                                  GARNET CHAPEL AT PENKENJOCH

                                  The Garnet Chapel is located in the middle of the magnificent Zillertal mountains on the sunny plateau of the Penkenjoch. It uniquely combines the nature of the garnet stone, which was previously mined in the Stillupptal, and local woods. The Garnet Chapel is dedicated to Blessed Engelbert Kolland, who comes from the Zillertal.

                                  The Garnet Chapel, or “Capella Granata”, as it is also called, was planned by Mario Botta. The architect, who comes from the Swiss canton of Ticino, is particularly known for his strictly geometric and simple design language. The interior is decorated with an image/portrait of the blessed in the form of a mosaic, which was made from 5 local woods by the sculptor Markus Thurner. Opposite the portrait is the icon of the Mother of God of Kazan.

                                  The Garnet Chapel is a place of silence, contemplation and devotion for all people, regardless of their religious affiliation.
