The "sofa cliff" was by no means the result of natural erosion, but the work of hardworking stonecutters from bygone days. The stair-like ascent and the good view - when the trees weren't there or were smaller - speak for it. It is believed that this is a solar cult site. The Bodensteiner cliffs extend for a length of about four kilometers between Bodenstein and the Jägerhaus am Hainberg.
They are built from the Hilsandstein of the Lower Cretaceous. This sandstone is mostly placed in the so-called sub-aptium and is around 110 million years old today.
It is advisable to wear good shoes.
