              The Great Lienewitzsee is about 13.78 hectares in size and about 740 meters long from north-east to south-west. Its widest point is about 200 meters with a maximum depth of 6 m. It is located in the area of the municipality of Michendorf.

              The lake is located south of the Havel in a wooded area in the Lienewitz-Caputh chain of lakes and wetlands nature reserve. In the north it has a ditch-like connection to Lake Caputh. This connection has usually dried up due to the lowered groundwater level. Southwest of the body of water is the Kleiner Lienewitzsee.

              The lake was first mentioned in a document as early as 1317 (stagnum quod dicitur Lynewitzersee). The name derives from an old Polabic basic form *Linovica or *Linovec, to *lin = Schlei and means something like Schleisee. The water body name was transferred to two medieval settlements, Ober- and Niederlienewitz.
