The Wettelrode artificial pond is a former copper mining artificial pond north of Wettelrode. It was created in 1728 to supply the Carolus shaft with water.

In 1729 the Heineckeröder Teichdamm was built in the valley between the Heineckeröder Berg and the Kriegsholz. He supplied the water features on the Kamp and on the Heiligenborn with water. In 1843 the dam was renewed and raised, increasing the volume of the pond to around 195,000 m³. At the same time, a 311 m long Rösche was driven through the Kriegberg, through which the water was fed to the Carolus and Johann shafts.

The dam was raised again in 1850. The pond now held 208,500 m³ with a water area of 4.57 ha.

When the Carolus shaft collapsed in 1880, the water from the Wettelröder pond was no longer needed. As a result, the pond was no longer maintained, which led to the dam bursting on November 29, 1939 after heavy rainfall. In retrospect, the bottom outlet was considered to be undersized and the overflow also had insufficient flow capacity, since fish rakes had been installed in 1938. As a result, the crest of the dam was overflowed, causing it to rupture. The dam failure caused flooding in major lines, with extensive property damage and loss of livestock. Luckily there were no human lives to be lamented. The dam was not repaired until 1952, probably due to the Second World War

I was on a bike ride in the Harz Mountains and passed by the Kunstdeich (art dike) and wanted something to eat and drink.
I ordered a drink and a Bockwurst (sausage). The sausage took a while to arrive, and when I got it, I was a bit shocked.
The Bockwurst was just as big as the bread roll surrounding it. And that for €3.50!
