From 1891 to 1921, a limestone quarry existed on the site of today's lake. In 1890, a 30-meter-high mountain still stood here. Shell limestone, which formed in the Triassic period approximately 240 to 233 million years ago, was mined there. The limestone was used for cement production. After limestone mining ceased in 1921, the lake was formed by inflowing groundwater and rainwater.

From 1921 until the 1950s, the Graeb family's timber processing business existed on the southern shore of the lake (from which the popular name Graebsee is derived), which used the lake to water tree trunks. Remains of the business above the southern shore survived until the mid-1990s and were only demolished when new residential buildings were built.

For a time, the lake was used as a swimming pool. In the 1970s, there were plans to terrace part of the steep bank and build a café for daytrippers. However, the plans were never realized.

In 1979, the western part of the Bruchsee, with its steep bank, was protected as a natural monument.

For years, part of the water was used to air-condition the Prisma cinema, built in 1982/83. With the demolition of the cinema, the associated regulation was discontinued, so the water level rose noticeably in the following years. Since the installation of a new pump, excess water has been continuously diverted into the nearby Saugraben, which flows through it to the Saale River. Thus, the lake is now part of the groundwater management system for Halle-Neustadt.
