The Selz is a 61 km long, southern and left tributary of the Rhine and one of the main waterways in Rhenish Hesse.[5] It flows in the Rhenish Hesse table and hill country in Rhineland-Palatinate through the Palatinate Donnersberg district and the Rhenish Hesse districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen. The Selz rises near Orbis on the northern edge of the Donnersberg district. It flows through the districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen, a cultural landscape that has long been densely populated and intensively used for agriculture. After around 63 kilometers, the Selz flows into the Rhine near Ingelheim. Its 375 square kilometer catchment area is characterized by a warm, dry climate with annual rainfall of around 500 millimeters.

Despite its low and often irregular water flow, the Selz is considered the collecting artery of the low-precipitation hills of Rheinhessen. The Selz Association carried out renaturation work on the Selz in the early 1990s, which also attracted a great deal of attention beyond the region.
