The Col du Tourmalet is one of the most legendary in the Pyrenees and the Tour de France. It is the pass that has been used most often in the history of the Tour since its first time in 1910. Culminating at 2,115 meters above sea level, it is also one of the highest. It is reached from Luz-Saint-Sauveur via 19 kilometers at 7.4% or from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan over 17.2 kilometers at 7.37% on average.

The Col du Tourmalet is a mythical pass of the French Pyrenees, and the view is exceptional there in good weather. It is a must for all cyclists

Tourmalet is a true cyclist’s climb. It’s steeped in history and whereas many popular cols are often polluted with coaches and sports cars, Tourmalet is relatively quiet. Whilst some sections are tough it rarely touches 10% but at 19km it’s long from Luz-Saint-Sauveur.

Col du Tourmalet is part of our Montagnes du Monde series, head over to bit.ly/3BfpoIS and claim your badge if you rode this classic.

          2월 6, 2017

At 2,115 m, the Col du Tourmalet is the highest French Pyrenees pass. So it is a blessing that every 1,000 m a sign shows the altitude meters that have already been reached. The fact that the remaining distance to the pass and the average gradient over the next kilometer is shown on the same sign sometimes becomes a curse.

But it is precisely the last few kilometers that give you that real pass feeling and give you a foretaste of the feeling of happiness on the pass. The monument above commemorates Jacques Goddet, former director of the Tour de France and founder of the sports newspaper L'Equipe.

The route Laurent Fignon is probably the nicer way to the summit even though hardly anyone uses it (from Luz -Saint-Sauveur). It branches off to the right just after the "flat" section and is closed to traffic (a large sign with Laurent Fignon shows the way). Shortly before the summit he meets the main road again.

The Col du Tourmalet is one of the classics of the Tour de France and at the same time the highest French Pyrenees pass. The approach to the west is infinitely uniform down to the last kilometer with an average of around 8%.

The approach to the east is so much steeper at first that you think you are driving against a wall. The last switchbacks put you in the right mood for a real pass feeling at the end.

I started from Bagnères de Bigorre, that is to say 29 km of Montée for a vertical drop of 1600 meters.
The slope is fairly gentle 3 or 4% until Sainte Marie de Campan is about 18 km from the summit.
After 2 or 3 km the slope becomes around 8% jipusqu at 10 km from the summit. From the slope is always above 9% with peaks at 13%.
Hard for morale because the road has long straight lines and it EC this constant inclines, impossible to have a moment of rest.
In La Mongie, after a peak at 13%, we start the last 4 kilometers where we find switchbacks and a slope slightly lower but higher than 8%.
Finally the last kilometer at 10%, but we do not feel it thanks to the sight of the sum.

Of course you go here. Great slope, great area, best asphalt and it's high too. Only the monument is currently dismantled (September 2022). But that does not prevent.

The Col du Tourmalet is the most iconic pass in the Pyrenees. It's also the highest. It's notable for its toughness and for being part of the Tour de France. To reach its summit, at 2,115 meters above sea level, you can choose to climb via its east or west slopes.

Tourmalet is pleasure, toughness, and sweat.
