The construction of the cathedral was begun in 1226, after the grandson of Henry the Lion, Henry Borwin II had decided on his deathbed the foundation. But the consecration of the altar was made only in 1335, because as long as the completion of the venerable building took. At Güstrower Dom, as in many church buildings of the 13th century, the transition from Romanesque to Gothic can be seen well. The cross-shaped floor plan and the elongated choir room indicate the Romanesque concept. The massive west tower is 44 m high. Significant is the interior of the cathedral. Works of art from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as "Der Schwebende" by Ernst Barlach can be admired here. The area surrounding the cathedral, the former Domfreiheit, was renovated in 1995. With its limited citizen's buildings, the square conveys in a special way the flair of a medieval ensemble.

Güstrow Cathedral is the oldest building in the Barlach town of Güstrow. In 1226 it was donated on the deathbed by Prince Henry Borwin II, a grandson of Pribislav and Henry the Lion. The main task of today's parish church was initially the spread of the Christian faith in the conquered Slavic country.

After the completion of the nave and the tower, the cathedral was consecrated in 1335 by the Bishop of Kammin, today Kamień Pomorski. In 1552 the catholic chapter of the cathedral was abolished. The cathedral stands empty and is used as a carriage barn for 12 years. In 1568 it became a Protestant court church and a burial place for the Güstrow princely house until 1695.

The Güstrow Cathedral was initially begun in the Romanesque style and then completed in the Gothic style. The building is richly furnished with art treasures from the late Romanesque to modern times. For example the late Gothic winged altar by Hinrik Bornemann, the Duke Ulrich monument by Philipp Brandin and the apostle figures by Claus Berg. The most famous work that was created for Güstrow Cathedral is Ernst Barlach's “Floating End”. In 1927 the monument against the war was erected, removed in 1937 as degenerate art and melted down in 1944 for war purposes. In 1953 the third cast of the “Floating” was placed back in the cathedral above an 18th-century wrought-iron baptismal grid.

Beautiful pictures of the cathedral, I visited him when Komoot did not exist (2009). He is often confused with the parish church of St.Marien in the marketplace, also nice, but not the cathedral. Thanks for these pictures, I reminisce.

The "Floating Angel" (also known as "The Floating One") seen here in Güstrow Cathedral, a famous work of art by Ernst Barlach (1870 to 1938), can also be admired in the Rhineland, in the Antoniterkirche in Cologne. See komoot.de/highlight/3597904

Three works by Ernst Barlach can be found in the north aisle. In 1927 he created the memorial for the victims of World War I, "Der Schwebende". This was removed from the cathedral as "degenerate art" in 1937 and melted down for armament purposes. In 1952 a second cast was made in Cologne, and in 1953 it came to Güstrow Cathedral.

Güstrow Cathedral is part of the North German brick Gothic style and has a rich interior from the late Romanesque period to the modern era, including Ernst Barlach's Floating Man. It is spread out on the southern edge of the city and exudes a great sense of calm. The cathedral square is a special ensemble in the city. Here is the oldest school in Mecklenburg, the former court of Wallenstein, and within sight we find the Renaissance castle. The cathedral was founded in 1226 and consecrated in 1335. In 1568 it became the Protestant court church and burial place for the Güstrow royal family until 1695, when the Güstrow line died out. The cathedral was last renovated in the spirit of neo-Gothic from 1865 to 1868.

There are two extensive informative explanatory panels on the sculpture, its creation and on Ernst Barlach in the entrance area / aisle. Still an impressive piece of work this sculpture.
The cathedral can be visited for a donation, photo permission 2 euros extra.

The cathedral was founded in 1226 by Henry the Lion's grandson, Heinrich Borwin II. However, the construction was not finished until 1335. The transition from Romanesque to Gothic is easy to see at the Güstrow Cathedral. The powerful impression is conveyed by the harmony of the nave and the tower. The entire structure extends over 70 meters, the west tower is 44 meters high. This is wider than the central nave with small transepts on the north side. In 1568 the cathedral became a Protestant court church and, until 1695, the burial place for the Güstrow dynasty.

Beautiful brick Gothic with a light interior, a magnificent yet emotional altar and two remarkable large family trees to the left of the altar.

Barlach's "Floating Man" hangs in the left wing. Concentrated and intimate.
