The amphitheater Birten is entered together with Vetera castra as a permanent ground monument (WES 008) in the list of monuments of the city of Xanten.

The remains of the historic amphitheater in Birten belonged to the legionary camp in Xanten/Vetera. The amphitheater was originally designed as a wood-earth construction. The remains of the outer ring of the amphitheater can still be seen. The amphitheater is now used for outdoor performances.

In 2021 the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under "Borders of the Roman Empire - Lower Germanic Limes".

The Lower Rhine was Roman territory for 500 years - and you can still see that in many areas today. But there are only a few buildings that give us a vivid picture of everyday Roman life. This undoubtedly includes the Roman amphitheater in Birten, a neighboring town of the much better known and larger Xanten.

The Roman soldier also wanted to be entertained in distant provinces as he knew it from Rome. Through contemporary descriptions and film adaptations - just think of the film Ben Hur - we are quite well informed about the sometimes cruel "entertainment programs". And so the amphitheaters in Xanten and Birten came about. The Birtener was built in a wood-earth construction and held about 6,000 visitors, the stone one in Xanten even 12,000. It has the shape of an ellipse and is 98 by 84 meters in size. The ranks consisted of heaped-up earthworks, which were separated from the arena by a wall of wood and earth about a meter wide.

Since 1924, the amphitheater has been used as an open-air stage for plays and musical performances - and now also for comedies.
