The Elbsche is a left-bank tributary of the Ruhr.

The Elbsche rises in "Langenbruch" in Albringhausen, a district of Wetter (Ruhr), and flows into the Ruhr in Wetter-Wengern after a length of about 7.5 km. In some sections it forms the border between the two cities of Wetter and Witten.

The Witten-Schwelm railway line, also known as the Elbsche Valley Railway, runs parallel to the stream for a long stretch. In the upper reaches, the railway line dominates the valley as a valley cut, which pushes the Elbsche to the edge. A cycle and hiking path is currently being built on the railway line, which will follow the river for almost its entire course.

In 1902, the meadow owners in the Elbschebach valley joined together to form a cooperative. The aim was to improve the Elbsche between Wengerner Mühle and Ratelbecke. Irrigation and drainage ditches were created in this area by 1904 in order to manage the meadows and optimize the course of the Elbsche. Later, further sections were worked on. Mining caused some streams to disappear. This led to a legal dispute with the Trappe mine in 1908. Over the years, the situation has improved. The Elbsche now offers nature many refuges again.

The Elbsche valley between the village of Albringhausen and Wengern is now designated as a nature reserve.

Its catchment area is largely dominated by agriculture, so that, together with the large difference in altitude between the source and the mouth, the water flow of the Elbsche can rise very sharply after heavy rainfall.

• Elbschetal viaduct in Wengern

• Historic town center in Wengern with glue box, Wengener church and Henriette Davidis Museum.
