    Apennine pass between the municipalities of Mele and Masone, both in the province of Genoa, the Turchino is one of the symbolic climbs of the Milan-Sanremo. Since the 1950s, the climb has been asphalted and is no longer able to create selection among the runners in the race, but it is still the highest point of the Classicissima.

    At the top of the Turchino, in addition to a memorial dedicated to Costante Girardengo, there is a tunnel redone in the 2000s. The Turchino is also known nationally for a singular idea proposed by a viewer of the program "Portobello", hosted at the end of the 1970s by the very famous Enzo Tortora. It consisted of knocking down the Turchino itself and this portion of the Apennines to open a passage between the sea and the Po Valley, thus presuming to solve the problem of the fog.

              Take the road coming from Masone, just before entering the Turchino tunnel. Narrow, rough asphalt, totally out of the way, it leads to the hilly area above Mele. Scattered houses, some isolated farms, rural landscapes of the past. Cyclistically fun, almost no motor traffic.

                Less than a km from Masone always along the SP456 towards the sea. Here the human settlements are becoming more and more rare. The ascent to the Pass gradually becomes steeper but without ever exaggerating.
                Beautiful and relatively safe places to pedal peacefully.

                          The Passo del Turchino is a mountain pass located between the cities of Masone and Mele in the Italian region Liguria. It is known for its annual appearance in the classic one-day cycling race Milan–San Remo, and occasionally in other races.
                          On 19 May 1944, fifty-nine civilians were murdered by Germans in a mass execution nearby. The episode is known as Strage del Turchino (Turchino massacre). This massacre was perpetrated as a retaliation following an attack from the Italian resistance when 5 German soldiers died.
