The St. Nicholas chapel shines bright, friendly and visible from far into the wide valley of the Wiesent. The medieval castle of the noble von von Reifenberg, whose family is first mentioned in documents in 1140, once stood here and in the area of the adjacent cemetery.
The castle was in the possession of the Bamberg monastery as early as 1185, before it decayed as official residence in the 15th century.
A castle chapel was first mentioned in 1460. In 1607, the parish priest Friedrich Bernhard had a choir built on the remains of the former castle chapel and the dilapidated church was rebuilt again.
A hundred years later in 1706, the small chapel was extended eastwards through the nave.
The tower with the late baroque onion dome was added in 1792. The interior of the church is neo-Gothic with a high altar, two side altars and a folk altar. Among the wall figures St. Nikolaus, St. Wendelin, St. Josef, the portrait of St. Barbara created by sculptor Friedrich Theiler, Ebermannstadt (1748-1826) stands out.
After a comprehensive renovation - May to December 2005 - the Reifenberger church shines again in new splendor inside and out.
