Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp II of Greiffenclau had the Catholic branch church of St. Michael rebuilt as a castle church in 1716. On September 27, 1717[6], Johann Bernard, auxiliary bishop of Würzburg, consecrated it to the Holy Archangel Michael.[Note 1]

The planning and execution of the well-proportioned late baroque church building goes back to the Würzburg court architect Joseph Greissing. It is an east-facing hall building measuring around 23 by 10 meters with a sloping choir and a western single-tower facade with sandstone structures. The three-story, approximately 28 meter high facade tower with its elegant eight-sided dome and crowning lantern towers impressively over the manor district and village.

Inside, the four-columned main altar with round gable pieces as a crown shows the Trinity symbol. Below is the donor's coat of arms, Prince-Bishop Greiffenclaus. The Assumption of Mary is depicted on the central altarpiece. The two side altars on the slanted corners of the nave are each set in cones stuccoed with shells and also have the Greiffenclau coat of arms. The side altars themselves also have conches with shell decoration, but are flanked by columns. They form the frame for mounted and partly gilded wooden figures that represent St. James the Elder and probably St. Gangolf (?). The workshop of the Würzburg court sculptor Jacob van der Auwera is responsible for the high-quality altar furnishings, analogous to the nearby castle church in Gereuth, which was built almost at the same time by the same donor and the same architect.
