The Allermöher meadows including the old Billwerder railway embankment cover an area of 106 hectares. This is characterized by grassland and open wet meadows and offers an ideal home for bird species that have now become rare, such as the lapwing, the black godwit or the redshank.

This NSG closes the gap between the nature reserves “Die Reit” and the “Boberger Niederung” and thus secures an important biotope network in the east of Hamburg. It includes both grassland and arid habitats. The largely open grassland, traversed by ditches, makes up the majority of the area with 88 hectares and is characterized by meadows and cattle pastures. Pumps and weirs ensure a higher water level here. Meadow birds such as the black godwit, redshank, lapwing and snipe find optimal living conditions here. These are among the most endangered bird species in Germany. The black-tailed godwit is considered "critically endangered" in Hamburg and throughout Germany. Rare amphibians such as the moor frog live in the trenches.

The old Billwerder railway embankment is an approximately 120-year-old landscape structure on which railway tracks actually ran in the past. A promenade now leads along the dam; it is a species-rich dry habitat, in which, for example, the rare Karthauser carnation occurs, which is on the red list of endangered species. A total of 142 different plant species can be found on the embankment, 33 of which are on the Red List. But this area also plays a special role for animals: especially for insects such as wild bees. 153 different types of bees were found on the embankment.
