Dating back to the late 11th century, teh castle has a long, rich history. In 1117, when Queen Urraca was surrounded in this castle by supporters of her son, the boy-king Alfonso VII, she managed to escape to Santiago de Compostela in search of the aid of Archbishop Gelmírez. Legend has it that she fled through the underground passageway that connected the castle to the banks of the Tea.
