    This wall is approx. 850 years old. It is the largest and one of the oldest brick buildings in Northern Europe. King Waldemar the Great of Denmark 🇩🇰 had this wall built.

      Under the rule of the Danish king Waldemar I, the Danework was massively expanded in the High Middle Ages. For almost four kilometers to the south, the wall was additionally reinforced with a five to seven meter high brick wall. At this point, part of the ruined wall was exposed.

          The Waldemar Wall represents the most significant expansion phase of the Danevirke. In the second half of the 12th century AD, the Danish King Waldemar I (*1131 - †1182) had the main rampart of the Danevirke reinforced with a brick wall. These were a new building material in Northern Europe. Waldemar wanted to protect the Danish Empire from raids by the Slavs and Saxons and at the same time demonstrate foreign policy strength. The wall is the largest and oldest secular building made of bricks in Northern Europe and can now be viewed as a ruin over a length of 80 meters.
