Only when the snow melts or heavy rainfall does water flow over the tufa limestone. It previously seeps through the karst limestone of the Monkberg until it meets the marl layers of the White Jura Alpha, which carry the water on. It then emerges as a so-called layer spring at the valley section of the lower heap and deposits the lime that has dissolved from the water connection as tuff. / Source: salmendingen.de/wasserfaelle
